$14.25 billion was pledged to the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB, & malaria!

Published on September 22, 2022

This is the most funding pledged for a global health institution ever. The Global Fund invests US$4 billion a year to defeat HIV, TB and malaria and ensure a healthier, safer, equitable future for all. The Global Fund is a unique partnership of stakeholders from the public and private sectors in more than 100 countries. Since its inception 20 years ago, the Global Fund has saved 50 million lives through various funding mechanisms. Just in the last year (2021), the Global Fund has contributed to treating 5.3 million people with TB. (See Results report, Global Fund, September 2022)

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck it demanded our attention and resources, allowing these ancient epidemics to regain momentum. The impact was devastating – for the first time in the Global Fund’s history, deaths from TB and malaria increased and hard-won progress was stalled. The phrase “12 Months of COVID-19 Eliminated 12 Years of Progress in the Global Fight Against Tuberculosis” by Stop TB Partnership, was easily relatable to many in the field of TB. The COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM) from Global Fund played a huge role in mitigating the catastrophic impact that COVID-19 could have had on the TB programs.

The Global Fund set out a new strategy for 2023 – 2028 in which it outlines plans to save another 20 million lives and make further progress to end the three diseases:  HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria. Every Life counts! But this required at least US$18 billion from governments and donors across the world.

As Javier Hourcade Bellocq of the Global Fund Communities Delegation said during the 7th Global Fund Replenishment meeting, "While governments count money, communities count lives”

On 21st September, despite the global financial instability, governments and donors stepped up! Many countries have pledged to increase their contribution by 30% or more, including the USA, Japan, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Indonesia, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, and many others.

Being part of McGill University based in Montreal Canada, the TBPPM Learning Network is especially proud of the contribution from Canada. Over the last six months, we partnered with many organizations that had a shared vision and passion to advocate for more funding for the Global Fund. You can read about these advocacy campaigns in our July 2022 Newsletter. The message was clear, Canadians care and want to do their fair share to end AIDS, TB, and Malaria! At the Global Fund Replenishment meeting, the Canadian leadership under Prime Minister Trudeau demonstrated that Canada is ready to finish the fight to end these longstanding epidemics by 2030 by pledging 1.21 billion CAD.
